Goats can handle your Christmas tree recycling

People will start eyeing their Christmas trees about now and wonder when it has to come down.

A farmer in Muskoka who raises Nigerian Dwarf therapy goats has a suggestion of what to do with your real tree once the decorations are off.

Erik Miitel and his girlfriend Angee Pell run Sky River Meadows in Utterson and say they will pick up your tree and recycle it at the farm. Goats love the needles and picking the branches clean.

However – they cannot accept trees that have fake snow or tinsel on them, as this can be hazardous to the small creatures.

“They can’t be chemically sprayed and all decorations need to be cleaned off,” says Miitel.

Having a good supply of trees would be helpful to their operation, but there are a dedicated few who donate after each Christmas.

“We have a small group of people that bring us out trees every year,” he says. “We can either pick them up or (people) can make an appointment and come and watch the goats eat the tree.”

He encourages people to come out to meet the animals and learn more about how the therapy goat program works. The goats also produce milk which is used in the production of cheese and soap.
