Fireplace and chimney safety vital this holiday season

Area fire departments are urging residents to keep an eye on chimneys and fireplaces this Christmas.

One of the present dangers is when people use their fireplace to burn wrapping paper. Flames can get quite high for a moment and that could reach the creosote in the chimney.

That could ignite a fire that would be hard to put out.

Wood burning stoves and the related connections need to be checked carefully as loose joints can lead to smoke leaking or if it is a gas stove, carbon monoxide.

Fire officials recommend installing a stovepipe thermometer that will monitor temperatures and help to adjust how hot your fire is burning.

Checking your chimney on the outside is important as well.

Make sure there has been no nesting of birds or other animals near the top.  It is essential that any debris is cleared out as it could fall into the chimney and catch fire or block the flue.

Also, a rain cap should be installed on top of all metal and masonry chimneys.

As always make sure smoke alarms and CO alarms are installed in the proper area and have fully functional batteries.

There is almost nothing worse than a fire at Christmas time, so help make sure your holiday stays safe.
