OPP urge caution on local waterways

Bracebridge OPP are reminding people that local waterways continue to remain unsafe.
Despite the seemingly early arrival of winter, lakes and rivers are not close to being frozen. A blanket of snow over a thin layer of ice may look inviting but could be fatal.
Police want snowmobilers to remember that dangers abound once water does freeze over as some homeowners use equipment to keep their boathouses and docks ice free to prevent damage.
As a result, a portion of a river may be ready for snowmobile traffic only to quickly turn into open water.
Police remind those homeowners keeping properties ice free that by law they must clearly mark the openings to the ice.
