Huntsville’s Nelson loses UFC debut but impresses

Huntsville’s Kyle Nelson didn’t win last night, but he impressed in his UFC debut.

Nelson, nicknamed The Monster, was brought in just four days before UFC 231 in Toronto to take on Brazil’s Carlos Diego Ferreira at UFC 231.

He was fighting in a higher weight class than his normal 145-pound feather-weight division.

Nelson started well against Ferreira but the Brazilian managed to get over top of the Huntsville native, leading to the ref stopping the fight in the second round.

Despite the result, Nelson says he impressed organizers around the UFC and he has inked a four-fight contract.

“(UFC President) Dana White came back and said ‘Good job kid’ and the UFC matchmaker said I did an awesome job,” says Nelson. “He can’t wait to have me back and let him know when I am ready to go at 145 (pounds) and they will get me a fight.”

As little as three weeks ago, Nelson, who now has a pro record of 12-2, was on a card in Romania. He says fighting in front of a home crowd made for a nice change.

“It was definitely nice going out and having the crowd cheer for you,” Nelson admits. “I don’t often get to fight close to home so being able to fight in Toronto ever is nice because a lot of my friends, family, fans can come down.

“But a lot of people showed up to support me for this one.”

Nelson was part of a 13 card bout in front of a packed house at Scotiabank arena.
