Temperatures have dropped so it is time to think about putting the boat into storage for the winter.
But there are a few things to remember to ensure your pride and joy doesn’t get damaged by the extreme cold conditions.
Most storage facilities recommend you empty your tank of fuel, reminding people that is the same gas your vehicle uses (unless it is a two-stroke engine). So if you have a portable tank, pour the contents for use in your car or truck.
If you do store for the winter with fuel in the tank it is wise to use a fuel stabilizer and fill the tank to nearly the top, allowing a little room for expansion. This greatly reduces the amount of moisture-laden air that can enter through the tank’s vent during temperature changes.
Winterizing the engine block is also critical so any water inside pipes does not freeze and crack expensive components. Some people opt for indoor storage with heating, but that does not protect against potential power outages that could temporarily freeze the engine and do damage.
There is actually ice and freeze boat insurance coverage available from most insurers for just this instance, but it is only available prior to temperatures dropping in your area.
Most storage facilities include some form of shrink wrapping to keep elements out of your vessel. Make sure you empty your boat of all important contents as once it is wrapped you are not getting back in until spring.
