Parry Sound Muskoka MPP Miller Saddened by New Deficit Numbers

Parry Sound Muskoka MPP Norm Miller is saddened by the actual deficit created by the Liberal party.

Following a report by the Financial Commission of Inquiry, it was revealed the Liberal government was leaving an actual deficit of $15 billion and not the $6.7 billion the Liberals had reported in the spring.

“I have a great deal of respect for our Auditor Bonnie Lysyk and I found it very disturbing when last year she told us the Province’s Public Accounts were not a fair and accurate reflection of our finances,” Miller was quoted in a statement.

Finance Minister Vic Fedeli painted a picture of gross mismanagement in releasing the details on Friday.

“The Commission report reveals a culture of waste embedded at the highest levels of the previous government,” said Fedeli.  “In an election year, they pursued a reckless spree of deficit-financed spending.”

It was also revealed that in 2017/18 the Liberals had told the public it was running a balanced budget. The new findings show an actual deficit of $3.7 billion.

“I am pleased that our government has cleaned up the accounting tricks used by the previous government to try to hide their deficits and that, unlike last year, the Auditor General gave the 2017/18 Public Accounts released today a ‘clean opinion’,” said Miller.

“The people of Ontario can count on their government to protect our province’s public finances and deliver on our promise to restore accountability and trust in government,” he said.
