An inmate has died at Beaver Creek Institution the minimum security prison has revealed.

Jan Soczek was 62 and had been serving 11 years for attempted murder.

He had been in prison since May of 2011 for spraying his then-wife Wendy with gasoline and lighting her on fire.

She survived the injuries and her story took on national prominence when her insurance company refused to cover the damage caused to the house in the attack.

Correctional Service Canada is reviewing the circumstances of Soczek’s death and has also brought in the OPP and coroner to investigate, which according to the release is standard protocol in these instances.
