Local fire department says working smoke alarms vital to fire prevention

The risk of fire is even greater now then it used to be. That’s according to the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department who has launched their Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Officer Mike Vadlja it’s really important to have an emergency plan and know where to go when a fire occurs.

Having working smoke alarms is vital to fire prevention. Vadlja says the stats in Ontario need to change.

Vadlja says you need to test your smoke alarms every month. He says it’s so sad to see a home destroyed or worse, people get hurt when it could have been avoided.

Fire Prevention Week runs until October 11th. Vadlja says the Province is currently looking at putting laws in place to also make it mandatory to have carbon monoxide detectors.
