OPP encourages you to check your medicine cabinet

Spring is the perfect time to clean everything including your medicine cabinet.

That’s the message from the OPP. Constable Philippe Regamey says it’s the perfect time to make sure kids don’t have access to your medication, and to check if any of it is unused or expired.

Regamey says it’s important to clean your medicine cabinet because police have received reports of prescription drugs falling into the wrong hands.

Regamey says taking drugs that aren’t prescribed to you can be a health-risk, and can even lead to an overdose.

The Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey reports that 11 per cent of students between grades seven and 12 have used opioids without a prescription in the past year.  Fifty-five per cent of these teens says they took them from a parent or sibling.
