If you plan on buying a gift card, the OPP wants you to check the barcode on the back.

That’s because of a new gift card scam that has been reported to police in Ontario. OPP Constable Philippe Regamey says scammers are putting altered stickers over the genuine barcode.

Regamey says police want to make sure everyone knows about it because scams can spread quickly.

If it turns out the gift card’s barcode has been tampered with, Regamey says you should go back to the business where you bought it with the receipt to let them know. You should also report it to police.
