Join a free program and reduce your risk of diabetes

The Algonquin Family Health Team is holding a Diabetes Prevention Program. Registered Dietitian Brenda Richards says it’s beneficial for those who are at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. She says the program is based on research done in the US back in the 1980s.

It all began three years ago when the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care awarded six family health teams across Ontario to teach this program.

Richards says they’ve seen positive results, since the program started. She says it’s satisfying to see the changes students experience.

The program is free and lasts 20 weeks. The first 10 meetings happen weekly and the last half bi-weekly. Topics include healthy eating, problem solving, stress management and more. Three new programs will start in March at various times and locations across the district. For more info go to Algonquin Family Health Team website.
