OPP warns your unlocked vehicle can leave you vulnerable to identity theft

You could end up losing more than your valuables if someone breaks into your car.

As the summer tourism season approaches, the OPP is reminding locals and visitors to lock your vehicles no matter where you are in Muskoka. Constable Mo Tilson says sometimes it’s not just money or electronics the thieves are after.

Tilson says if these personal information documents are stolen you can have your identity stolen. Thieves can set up loans or credit cards under your name or commit other crimes with your stolen identity.

Tilson says the best way to keep your car from becoming a target is by parking it in a well-lit area and either hiding your valuables out of sight or removing them from the vehicle when you’re not there.
