Local official says parental leave for LGBTQ couples is a forward government move

The feds are taking a step in the right direction to support the LGBTQ community.

Muskoka Pride Board Member Shawn Forth says he applauds a government decision to offer a maternity leave option for any secondary parents in Canada.

The changes will offer all Canadian parents 40 weeks of parental leave to split between themselves. But the non-birthing parent has to take at least five weeks of leave.

The funding would cover 55 per cent of the second parent’s income for up to 12 months.
