Federal budget introduces new Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program

New federal funding is targeting the employment and earnings gap between Indigenous and non-indigenous people.

Ottawa says Indigenous people are less likely to be employed than non-indigenous Canadians and those who do work typically earn less.

Announced in Tuesday’s budget, the government plans to invest over $2 billion towards the newly created Indigenous Skills and Employment Training program.

The initiative will focus on training for higher quality and better paying jobs.

Canadore College Vice President of Enrolment Management, Indigenous and Student Services Shawn Chorney says the program will offer new opportunities for those applying at the college.

First Nations will receive $1.1 billion in funding over 5 years and an extra $237.7 million every year.

Inuit will receive $325 million over 5 years with $32.6 million annually and Metis Nation will receive $161.2 over the same period with an additional $67 million annually.

Chorney says this money should be a game changer for people with hopes of starting a new career.

Ottawa says the new program replaces the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Strategy and expects to attract 15,000 more clients with its additional funding.
