Muskoka officials applaud federal budget funds for victims of workplace harassment

Muskoka Parry Sound Coordinated Sexual Assault Services is applauding a section of the federal budget.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced in yesterday’s budget $50.4 million to address sexual harassment at the workplace.

$25.4 million of that is earmarked for funding legal aid, which offers legal services for Canadians who cannot afford a lawyer.

Sexual Assault Services Executive Director Lauren Power says women are usually afraid to speak up if they have been harassed at work.

Power says going to court to address sexual harassment is usually a last resort but is thrilled about the money for legal aid in case women need the service.

Power also recommends that if you suspect a co-worker has been harassed, let her know you saw the incident and that you are prepared to support her.
