OPP launching poster campaign to raise public awareness of human trafficking

The OPP is launching a poster campaign in support of Ontario’s Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Commemorated for the first time last week, the day will be marked every February 22nd to shed light on the exploitation of people for the sex trade or forced labour.

The OPP’s Anti-Human Trafficking Investigation Coordination team hopes to stem the flow of young victims being lured from small towns in the Muskoka district with promises of love or a better life.

Acting Detective Sergeant Steve Bishop says while human trafficking has no bias towards age, sex, or race, high school age students are the biggest targets.

He says there are signs you can look for if think someone you know is being recruited.

He says police are not there to launch investigations but to help victims.

Posters alerting of human trafficking will be placed in locations across the province including airports, bus stations, restaurants, and gas stations.

Police urge you to call local OPP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) if you know of anyone who is being victimized.

You can also visit the OPP website for more information on human trafficking.
