Ontario is helping Wahta Mohawk Territory officials find a new economic opportunity.
Provincial officials announced the First Nation reserve would be getting a $93,500 grant to help with a commercial development feasibility study. Last April, Wahta officials shut down Iroquois Cranberry Growers after 48 years of operation. According to officials the business was losing money because the cranberry market was oversaturated with competitors.
Ontario officials are hopeful this grant will help the Wahta Mohawks find a business that will create new jobs and economic sustainability in the community. Officials say this grant is part of a reconciliation process with provincial Indigenous communities.
There’s no word on what new commercial opportunities Wahta officials might be considering.
