Officials ask Muskokans to keep an eye out for early-rising turtles

The early thaw in Muskoka could be trouble for local turtles.

Ontario Conservation Centre Volunteer Kelly Wallace says the unseasonable temperatures can entice turtles to come out of hibernation early. She says turtles can become stranded out in the open and will die if the temperature dips too low.

If you come across an early rising turtle, Wallace is asking you call the Conservation Centre at 705-741-5000 to get instructions on how to help it. You can also bring the turtle to a local wildlife rehab centre like Aspen Valley in Rosseau so they can be transported to the centre.
