Muskoka women in film the focus of a YWCA initiative

Local women in film are the highlight of an International Women’s Day event in Muskoka. The YWCA of Muskoka is hosting its 8th annual Muskoka Women in Film Festival next month to showcase the role and vision of female directors, writers, actors, and artists. The YWCA says it picks films that may not be otherwise seen in Muskoka.

The festival is featuring a presentation of Tiffany Stones by Anna Gaby Trotz, Kareen Burns and Sarah Spring. The photographic piece features portraits of well-known Muskokans, and is in tribute to Burns, who passed away in 2016.

Included in the film festival this year is a screening for high-school students during the day and a public screening in the evening. The short films directed by women will include Take a Walk on the Wild Side and Underdog. The feature film is Niugaa Yugaa – Keep Talking, which is the story of four Alaska Native women who fight to save a dying language.

The doors open at 6:00pm on March 8th at the Rene Caisse Theatre in Bracebridge. Films begin at 7:00pm and admission is by donation. YWCA is working with Reel Alternatives Huntsville,
Gravenhurst Fine Films and Spinning Reels to present the festival.
