New hospital equipment means patients can now have more advanced kidney stone treatment locally

More advanced kidney stone surgeries are now available in Muskoka. The South Muskoka Memorial Hospital has been able to purchase new a surgical laser thanks to donor support, which allows surgeons to provide more comprehensive care, according to Dr. Jonathan Rhee. Rhee is an urologist at MAHC, and he says patients can now have the advanced kidney stone procedure in Muskoka, instead of having to travel to larger centre.

The hospital foundation pitched in $185,000 to buy the holmium laser, which can treat kidney stones in certain areas and break-up larger kidney stones.

MAHC CEO Natali Bubela says this kind of equipment can reduce the travel burden for patients, and can also help in attracting new doctors to the area. She says it goes to show how donations can improve access to care.
