Winter bike festival hits Muskoka for the first time

It’s a sight not often seen in the middle of winter. Later this month, bikers of all ages will be hitting the trails around Deerhurst Resort for the first Muskoka Winter Bike Festival. There are 11 kilometres of trails around the Lakeside Golf Course, complete with a section across Peninsula Lake. Winter bike riding is usually done on what are called Fat Bikes, which have thicker tires and lower air pressure to allow them to stay on top of snow and not sink. However, officials say the cold weather means the trails should also be suitable for mountain bikers who have thick tires.

The event is for everyone of all ages and experiences, as there are ranging levels of races and activities for those who don’t want to ride. The event is a partnership between Deerhurst and The Bike Shop. Director of Sales at Deerhurst, Luke Nixon-Janssen, says with the growth of winter biking and fat biking in particular, it’s nice to see local businesses come together to build on an emerging sport in our community.

Registration details for the event, which runs on February 10th, is on the Winter Bike Fest website.
