Phone scam making the rounds in Huntsville

If an unlisted phone number calls you to talk about taxes, it’s a scam. The Town of Huntsville says residents have been contacting officials about suspicious phone calls, which are coming from an unlisted number and are about tax money that is owed.

The town says it will only contact residents about taxes through your normal tax bill that you get in the mail, not over the phone. Any amount that is owed, including interest, will be outlined in your bill. If you owe more than $20, the town will send an arrears notice in the mail. The town says those notices are generally sent in April, October and December.

If you get a suspicious phone call or have fallen victim to a phone scam, call the OPP. You can also file a complaint with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
