OPP: Ice might not be as thick as you think

The OPP is reminding sledders to be cautious on the ice this weekend. The Southern Georgian Bay detachment says that the recent cold temperatures may not have made as much ice as you think. It says no body of water freezes the same, and no ice is safe ice. The OPP also notes strong winds and high and low water levels from recent storms put a lot of stress on ice that has formed on the back bays and open areas of Southern Georgian Bay.

If you do head out this week, have a plan and make sure family or friends know what it is. Make sure your phone is fully charged, use a floater suit, and bring ice picks and a throw line.
