Lakeland Power says electrical safety should be top of mind when lighting up your home

Keep electrical safety in mind as you light up your home this holiday season.

Lakeland Power wants to remind residents to be cautious when working with electrical cords and decorative lights. Always use clips and not staples or nails when attaching lights to your home to avoid cutting into the cord.

When plugging in outdoor lights make sure to use Ground Fault protected outlets and never remove the third prong grounding pin on your extension cord. Officials say you should always read the labels on your lights before you put them up. Outdoor lights shouldn’t be used indoors. If you’re using more than one extension cord, keep the connection between the two cords above the ground and never let it touch the water.

If you leave the house or you’re heading to bed, make sure to turn off your lights. You can find more decorative lighting safety tips here.
