Giving Tuesday brings in some cash for the YMCA

The YMCA Simcoe Muskoka is benefiting from the opening day of the giving season. The annual Giving Tuesday campaign ran on November 28th this year, which brought in nearly $8,500 for the charity. The money will go into the various programs the Y runs, like employment, literacy, and immigration services. It also has health, fitness and recreation programs, as well as child care, volunteer development and outdoor skills programming. Last year, the Y provided over $1 million in financial assistance to 15,000 people to access those services, serving one in five people in Muskoka.

YMCA Vice President of Philanthropy, Brand and Community Development, Brian Shelley, says the statistics in Canada around Giving Tuesday are astonishing, and they see that same goodwill and generosity locally. He says Giving Tuesday is a great way to kick off the final stretch of their year-end fundraising campaign, and thanks everyone who helped out so the Y can continue to run its services.

Giving Tuesday happens in Canada after Black Friday and Cyber Monday ever since since 2013. The national campaign has a mission to use social media and generosity to bring real change in local communities. #GivingTuesdayCA was trending across Canada, and over 21 billion twitter impressions were made globally.

The Y’s fundraising campaign runs for the rest of December, and donation details are on its website.
