Blue-green algae blooms confirmed in Peninsula Lake

A water test has confirmed blue-green algae blooms are on Peninsula Lake.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change confirmed the blooms in the Huntsville lake are capable of producing dangerous toxins. But, toxins weren’t found in the water test. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is still warning residents not to use lake water for any type of cooking or washing. If toxins are produced by the blooms, they can’t be destroyed by boiling or using water filters. Officials say you should avoid swimming in water where the algae are nearby as well. The blooms will turn the water a greenish or pea soup colour. The health unit says it will continue to monitor the lake and provide more updates. There’s no timeline on when the water will be safe to use again.
