Safety concerns along Muskoka Road 3 raised at Huntsville council

Muskoka Road 3 North drivers may have to start slowing down. Huntsville is planning to ask the District of Muskoka for approval to change the speed limit from 60 kilometres an hour to 50 kilometres an hour, from Highway 60 to  Williamsport Road.

Councillor Jonathan Wiebe says he has been hearing safety concerns about the area, and wants to be proactive to stop the dangerous situation. He says traffic goes fast up that hill, and tends to flow around trucks going in and out of the quarry. He says there have been too many cases of trucks turning into the quarry with cars passing on the shoulder, which he calls a recipe for disaster.

Wiebe also pointed out there is an issue in the winter when the snow starts to fall. He says people in the area claim there isn’t enough snow removal to clear the entire shoulder, so pedestrians are either walking on top of snow banks or trying to navigate what’s left of the shoulder.

He says development isn’t going to slow down in the area, and the town needs to stay on top of it.

On top of asking for the speed change, Huntsville also wants signs that say “trucks turning” and “do not pass on shoulder” signs in the southbound left lane ahead of the quarry. It also wants a commitment for complete snow removal on the west side of the road.
