Huntsville man driving to Texas this weekend to help hurricane and flood victims

A Huntsville man is packing up his pick-up truck and making the 2,700 kilometre drive to Texas on Friday. Alex Romano says he wants to help out in areas that have been affected by Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent flooding. He says he is going to pack the truck and a trailer up with as much stuff as possible and will be handing supplies out to those in need.

He says he’s looking for clothes, toiletries, blankets and pillows. He says once he crosses the border he’ll buy some food and water and fill up any free space in his trailer. Romano says the long drive is worth it if he can bring comfort to some of the people affected.

Romano says people in Texas are still on rooftops, the rain is still coming down and the situation is overwhelming. He also notes recent heavy rain and flooding in Huntsville helped to create the plan to drive south.

Romano is going to park in front of Robinson’s Independent Grocers from 6:00pm to 9:00pm tonight and tomorrow night to try and gather some donations. After that, he’ll head down south on Friday afternoon.

It was noted at today’s committee meeting in Huntsville that the town got around 100 millimetres of rain during last Tuesday’s storm, while some areas of Texas had around 1,300 millimetres of rain fall during the storm.
