Ontario's Appeals Court upholds portage ban at Bala Falls

Ontario’s Court of Appeal has upheld an MNR ban on portaging at a location at Bala Falls.
In a recent hearing on the matter, the issue of safety was raised and the 2009 double drowning at the location was referenced. It happened when two adult men drowned tried to save a child.
The decision released today cites Transport Canada’s review conclusions, which state that primary and other alternate portage routes are still available for the public to move between Lake Muskoka and the Moon River. This mean’s the public will still be able to portage between the Moon River and Lake Muskoka, just not at the historic location which had been chronicled by acclaimed surveyor David Thompson.
