Huntsville green lights the Hunters Bay Trail extension, which is around $150K over budget

Huntsville is forking out some more cash to pay for the Hunters Bay Trail extension. The project is now going to cost around $750,000 which is about $150,000 over budget.

Director of Operations Steve Hernen says the biggest reason for the spike in cost is because the Ministry of Transportation required more fencing along the trail. Council debated the extra cost in Tuesday night’s meeting, with many frustrated at the sudden request from the MTO for another 270 metres of fencing.

However, in the end council felt it was too late to cancel the project as it’s already underway. Huntsville had some funding deadlines because of the different grants that are helping to pay for the project, so supplies were already purchased. That includes the pedestrian bridge, security fences, the floating trail, and paid consultations fees.

The town is paying for part of the project, along with the Pan Am Legacy Fund, TransCanada Trail, and District of Muskoka.
