Muskokans supporting an idea to rename Highway 60 to the Tom Thomson Parkway

A pitch to rename part of Highway 60 to Tom Thomson Parkway is being well received in Muskoka. Lake of Bays Mayor Bob Young is spearheading the idea, saying it’s the road to Algonquin Park, which is where the famous painter is known for. Young says renaming the road will also teach out-of-towners the contribution of Thomson to the area.

Moose FM went to the streets to find out how the community feels about the idea.

Thomson is best known for his artwork inspired by Algonquin Park, as well as his hand in bringing together the famous group of Canadian artists the Group of Seven.

Young also points out the timing is perfect because 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the famous painter’s death, as well as Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Young is now going to go to the Ministry of Transportation to propose the idea. He says if the Ministry is on board, he’d like to see unique road signs that connect to Thomson’s art.
