Lakeland Energy is looking to the District of Muskoka to assist in a rural internet project

Lakeland Energy is looking for a $10 million loan from Muskoka to bring fibre optic internet to rural communities.

On Monday, CEO Chris Litschko spoke with council during a District of Muskoka meeting.

Litschko says the project is going to cost just over $25 million and there is a federal program that will fund up to 75 per cent of that cost back.

He says because Lakeland is still a smaller company, they don’t have the financial ability to take on the full $25 million up front.

The project would cover 415 kilometers of a trunk line, which will feed various rural areas of Muskoka, some of Parry Sound and the Wahta Mohawk Territory hitting nearly 4,000 homes.

District Council is in favour of providing this loan to Lakeland if the company is able to get the federal funding back.

The application still needs to be made to the feds, and Lakeland will find out if it will receive this funding in the summer.

If the funding comes through, Lakeland officials say they could be on track to start building this network by next year.
