The number of dismissed sexual assault cases in Muskoka is significantly higher than the rest of Canada

Over half of sexual assaults reported in Muskoka in the last five years have never made it to court.  That’s the finding of a 20-month long investigation by the Globe and Mail.

The paper reports the national number is 19 per cent, but here in Muskoka that number jumps to 55 per cent in Huntsville and 56 per cent in Bracebridge.  Those cases have been deemed baseless and unfounded by police.

Peter Leon, the OPP’s Provincial Corporate Communications Officer, says they will now be investigating.

Leon says it’s too early to know if there are any underlying trends with the cases that are called unfounded, whether that is drugs or alcohol playing a factor, or if the victims are primarily young women.

However, he says once the OPP’s provincial review is done, the information will be made available.
