Muskoka seeing widespread flu activity

The flu is spreading in Muskoka. Simcoe Muskoka’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Charles Gardner, has made an official declaration of widespread influenza in the area.

Gardner says the declaration comes after assessing flu activity in the community. That means looking at emergency room visits, lab-confirmed cases, outbreaks in different institutions, and doctor reports of flu-like symptoms.

The formal declaration means Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Public Health Ontario are aware of the situation. It will also help healthcare workers put certain policies and strategies into effect to stop the flu from spreading further, especially in healthcare facilities.

The health unit says with widespread influenza in the community, everyone needs to be extremely careful in protecting themselves. Make sure everyone in the family has a vaccine, wash your hands more than normal, and avoid contact with other people when sick.
