Venturing on the ice is not advised during December

It’s that time of year that some people might want to start venturing out onto the ice on lakes and rivers.
Bracebridge Fire Department wants to remind you that December may be a bit too early to try and walk on the ice.
Fire Prevention Officer Mike Peake says going near the water at all whether there’s ice or not can be very dangerous.
The general rule on ice safety is to avoid walking on ice that is less than four inches thick.
Ice needs to be more than five inches thick to be safe for a snowmobile and at least 12 inches thick for a vehicle.
If you’re not sure if the ice is safe to walk on, you should avoid it.
