OPP in Muskoka is reminding residents to think about security when closing up your cottage for the winter.
As many cottagers tend to close up after Thanksgiving weekend, police are providing a few safety tips to make your cottage seem less tempting to possible thieves.
Police say the most important thing is securing doors and windows and making sure all curtains are shut before you leave.
Don’t leave anything expensive or of value as these will be quick targets for theft.
If you do leave valuables behind, make sure to write down their serial numbers so they can be easily tracked if stolen.
Make sure vehicles are winterized and secured and never leave anything on a trailer unless its locked or disabled.
Finally, never leave any weapons behind.
