District of Muskoka may soon take steps to begin attracting commercial airlines to Muskoka Airport

The District of Muskoka will be taking some very large steps in bringing regional commercial flights to Muskoka.
On Monday, the Planning and Development Committee will meet to discuss some big ticket items.
This includes applying for the Muskoka Airport to become the equivalent of a class 3 airport with Transport Canada, pursuing various cost savings methods including cost recovery with CATSA security screening and sending out an RFP to find the best option for the screening facility.
One of the options recommended is to build an entirely new terminal at the airport to the tune of about $1 million.
The committee would like to explore the possibility of applying for grants through FedNor, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ontario 150 fund.
Finally, the committee will discuss moving forward with Explorers’ Edge on beginning formal discussions with airline services.
All decisions made during this committee meeting will need to be approved during the next district council meeting.
Officials have been aiming for next summer to have regional commercial flights up and running.
