Parry Sound Muskoka MP Tony Clement is showing support for local groups looking to sponsor Syrian refugee families.
Since one family was brought to Gravenhurst, the Canadian Government has suddenly bottle-necked the approval process on allowing new refugees into Canada.
This is because the original goal of 25,000 families was reached and extra resources funnelled into the project have been pulled back.
But, there are still groups across Canada, with three in Muskoka and one in Parry Sound, waiting to bring families they’ve been paired with to their new homes.
Clement called on the Liberal government in a statement released on Thursday to once again accelerate the process of bringing families to groups that have already raised the money to bring them here.
The local groups in Parry Sound and Muskoka have expressed their frustrations over this process.
One group was told they could be waiting upwards of five years to bring their family to Muskoka.
A few groups have been forced to ask residents to take back donations of clothing and furniture as they have nowhere to store these items over a long period of time.
