Clement calls a study into electoral reform a farce

A Liberal Government move to implement a committee to study electoral reform is being called a farce.

Parry Sound-Muskoka MP Tony Clement called the move a farce because a majority of the committee is Liberal given opposition parties no meaningful way to ensure that the committee’s recommendations are reflective of the will of Canadians.

Clement says a referendum on the Liberal plan is the only way to ensure any change has the clear support of Canadians, and that the government’s plan is fair and transparent.

No government in Canada has tried to impose a new voting system without a referendum since the early 1950s and the Conservative Party insists that Canadians must have the final say, in a national referendum, on any proposed changes to how Canadians elect their MPs.

Clement has announced that he will hold a forum on electoral reform in the riding this year to garner the views of his constituents.
