Muskoka ACS celebrates national awareness week for emergency dispatchers

This week is a time to recognize emergency service dispatchers.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is dedicated to the people who answer the phone when you call 9-1-1.

In Bracebridge, Muskoka Ambulance Communications Service plays a major part in the region.

Operations Manager Jason Moore says his operators deal with fire and ambulance service calls for a huge area.

Moore says when a call comes in, there are a number of tasks a dispatcher needs to complete, all within a short amount of time.

He adds the job can definitely come with a certain level of stress, but all employees are given the skills to deal with it.

On Thursday afternoon, Muskoka ACS held a special open house to give an inside look into its operations.

Bracebridge Councillor Steve Clement was at the open house to tour the facility.

He says these workers play a tremendous role in getting the paramedics to where they need to be, all while dealing with whatever is happening on the other end of the phone line.

Clement is no stranger to emergency services having spent a portion of his life working as a dispatcher in Muskoka as well.
