Doughty: Huntsville's next mayor and council should get more pay

The mayor of Huntsville is disappointed with the salary increase for the next mayor and council. On Monday, council approved a $500 per year increase for councillors and a $3,000 per year increase for the mayor. Mayor Claude Doughty says he wishes council went with the original recommendation. The original recommendation was to pay councillors $1,000 more a year over four years and the mayor $6,000 a year.

Doughty says the next mayor will not be paid enough for the amount of work it takes to be mayor of Huntsville.

The pay raise still puts Huntsville behind other municipalities. Doughty says the mayor of Gravenhurst currently gets paid about $6,000 more than Huntsville.

Doughty says you shouldn’t have to be retired, or rely on another form of income to be mayor.
