Smith says if flooding has already occurred,  people should not go into their basement. There could be electrical equipment or devices on the floor that could prove to be a deadly mix when water’s a factor. He says you should leave the building and contact your local utility to come and isolate the house.

If you suspect any of your equipment has suffered water damage, you should have it checked out by a licensed electrical contractor before it’s turned back on.
