OPP pushing for seatbelt safety and responsible driving this weekend

It’s Easter Long Weekend and the OPP wants you to buckle up. Central Region Media Relations Coordinator Sergeant Peter Leon says we’re going to see more people on our roads coming up for the weekend.

Leon says nine people have died so far because of improper seatbelt use. About 10,000 children are injured or killed on roads across Canada a year. Leon says drivers are responsible for making sure passengers under 16 are wearing seatbelts and proper car seats are being use for the younger kids.

The OPP wants you to have a plan this long weekend and make sure you’re being responsible.

Officers will be out in full force looking for distracted, aggressive and impaired drivers. Meantime, the warm weather expected in the next few days, has the OPP wanting you to be careful as well. Leon says you should stay away from ice covered surfaces.

Leon says parents should especially warn their children about the dangers of the spring thaw and keep extra watch over them this weekend.
