UPDATED: Two local women and their team reported OK following devastating earthquake in Nepal

Two local women and their team who are currently embarked upon a climb for charity on Mount Everest are ok following the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

Kelly Hammond and Brandy Van Gelder, known as the Dream Team, are making the climb to 18,000 feet within 18 days. It’s said that nearly 1400 people have died in the powerful earthquake, with more feared trapped under rubble.
The 7.8 magnitude quake hit an area between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara.
Tremors were felt across the region and on Mount Everest.

Ed Hammond posted the following on the page Saturday morning:

“I write to all of you this morning with great concern regarding the news we have received.
There has been an Earthquake in Nepal.
We do know that Kelly and Brandy along with the rest of the Dream Team seems to be okay with a few minor injuries.
We do not know where this will go from here but will continue to update.”

UPDATE #1: Ed Hammond tells the Moose that Kelly Hammond has some minor injuries due to falling debris but is doing just fine. The whole team is back together as a group and is camped outside the hotel in Kathmandu where they have food, shelter and water. He also says it will be up to the girls if they push on with their trek. The Canadian government has also been contacted and will intervene if needed.

UPDATE#2: Ed Hammond has released this text to the community from Kelly Hammond:

“Hi everyone. …we have luckily found a moment of internet but it’s not guaranteed so I will be quick. I can receive texts when there is service but am saving my only outgoing for Ed right now as we don’t know what is going to happen. Brandy Van Gelder and I along with the team are all accounted for and safe in our hotel. Our hotel did NOT collapse and we have not yet left on our trek so we are right in the middle of the chaos. There is tragedy everywhere but we are blessed to be in a Japanese constructed hotel that are supplying us with food and water. We have just experienced many many aftershocks and yet another big quake about an hour ago but we are all currently ok. Please send your prayers to these beautiful people of Nepal and all that they have lost. We are very very grateful to be alive and we thank you for the hundreds of messages we are receiving. We cannot read them all but know that we are in your prayers. Jorja….your beautiful prayer candle is working baby. I love you Xoxoxo.”
