Grandparent Scam steals $2.4-million from over 740 Canadians

Huntsville OPP is asking you to be careful about the ongoing Emergency Scam. Last year, almost 10 per cent of complaints submitted to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre were victims of this scam. It can also be called the Grandparent Scam, which happens when someone calls or emails claiming to be a friend or relative in trouble.

Normally they need you to send money to get them out of a bad situation like a car crash or jail. Sometimes two people will call with one pretending to be the person in trouble and the other a police officer or lawyer. The scammer then asks you questions to get you to volunteer personal information.

Police are asking you to check with another family member or friend first to verify the information before sending any money or personal info. If you ever come across this scam call police right away.
