Bracebridge Mayor says joint Huntsville/Bracebridge fight for local healthcare remains in effect

Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith says a united Huntsville/Bracebridge front to fight for strong local healthcare remains in effect. Smith took some heat last week after Bracebridge unveiled a proposal to provide Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) with 44.5 acres of land where a new Bracebridge hospital site could be built in Bracebridge…

Critics interpreted the move as Bracebridge trying to suggest that one acute care hospital site should service all of Muskoka from Bracebridge, but Smith says Huntsville and Bracebridge Councils and residents both want sites in their own towns under a two-site model that could still be approved. Smith tells Moose FM that should a “doomsday” scenario become a reality with only one site being picked for all Muskoka, then the Bracebridge proposal could act as a backup plan…

The Mayor has spoken with Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison and says he and Aitchison hope to speak to Ministry of Health officials in the near future about the ongoing issues. MAHC is currently deciding from amongst several future options. MAHC officials say they won’t be considering the Bracebridge proposal until a preferred future healthcare model is chosen.
