Huntsville landlord fined $2,000 for not having working smoke alarms

A local landlord must pay up for not having working smoke alarms. Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Prevention Office Mike Vadlja says the inspection was done last November after the tenant had concerns with some of the fire safety items.

Vadlja says this incident is a reminder that both the landlord and tenant have a role to play in fire safety.

The fire code also says landlords must test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every year, after a change in tenancy or when the battery has been replaced.  Vadlja says landlords have a responsibility to keep their tenants informed.

The Huntsville landlord pleaded guilty for not installing an alarm on the lower level and failing to maintain a smoke alarm on the upper level of the home. The landlord has been fined $2,000.
