New program encourages girls to get into computer sciences

It’s a challenge to get more girls interested in computer science. Huntsville High School is hosting the Programming Challenge for Girls at the Waterloo Summit Centre today. Grades 9 and 10 students from Huntsville High School, BMLSS and Fenelon Falls are taking part in the event which runs from eight to four. Co-Chair of the event Ian McTavish says only 12 per cent of women enrolled in Ontario universities for computer science in 2012 compared to the 88 per cent of men. He says he hopes initiatives like the Programming Challenge for Girls will help change that.
