There’s a hydro scam going around that’s affecting Lakeland Power customers. Scammers are calling customers saying they work for Lakeland. The scammer tells the victim they must pay their outstanding bills or their power will be disconnected. They will ask you to pay over the phone with a credit card, pre-paid Visa cards or wire transfer. The scammer will even go as far providing a call back confirmation number. Customer Service Manager Sharon Shipston says Lakeland has strict procedures when dealing with disconnecting power because of non-payments. She says Lakeland does not accept payments directly over the phone. Shipston says she encourages customers to set up pre-authorized payments or pay your bill through your bank. If you get a call like this, call the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
