St. Dominic High School is pleased with their Grade 9 math and literacy scores. Principal Kevin Strong says although the math was typically low in applied math across the board and the province, St. Dominic didn’t have any students go below a level 2.

In academic math, just over 80 per cent of students are achieving the provincial standard. Strong says they have also had strong results in literacy with 83 per cent of first time eligible students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard which is up three per cent from last year.
Having a small school is a benefit to St. Dominic when it comes to education. Strong says there are 200 students. He says having smaller classrooms gives teachers the opportunity to focus on the needs of individual students.

Despite positive scores for St. Dominic, the school is seeing a gender gap. Strong says engaging the boys literacy program continues to be a priority. He says with the age of technology, kids these days don’t like to pick up a book.

For details on how the school did, you can go to the EQAO website. The school completed a detailed analysis of the data to assess how students have improved since taking the reading, writing and mathematics EQAO tests in Grade 6. Strong says his students have demonstrated a significant improvement over time in all three subject areas.
